IBEW Leaders Bring Engagement and Enthusiasm to First Week of New Business Manager Training Training and EducationShaina HardieNovember 8, 2024 IBEW First District New Business Manager Training: Class of 2025 This week, IBEW leaders from across Canada participated in Week 1 of the IBEW New Business Manager Training (NBMT) held in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This comprehensive two-week course is designed to equip IBEW leaders with the essential information, resources, and skills to manage their local union’s day-to-day affairs. In week one of NBMT, education focused on the various legal, financial, and fiduciary obligations required of a Business Manager and the processes in place to ensure compliance. In week two, trainees will learn strategies for managing the demanding day-to-day operations of a local union office. Topics will include team building, time management, conflict resolution, bargaining, and business development. This week’s training featured an “IVP Bear Pit” session in which International Vice President Russ Shewchuk answered questions from the group. Participants engaged with the IVP on various topics, including IBEW rules and policies, collective bargaining, leadership responsibilities, and succession planning. The highly engaged class promoted insightful discussions that fostered a deeper understanding of the IBEW local union processes and procedures. “It was an extreme pleasure to join Week 1 of the new Business Manager Training with newly elected IBEW Business Managers, Presidents, and local union executives from coast to coast,” Shewchuk stated. “I want to thank this tremendous group of leaders in District 1. Their participation and insight this week was outstanding and I am very proud to support them.” IVP Shewchuk noted situations may arise where further guidance is needed. He urged the group, “When in doubt, call your International Representative. Our Reps are here to assist, share knowledge, and provide insight to help our local union leaders make informed decisions.” Special thanks to IBEW Canada’s Education Specialists, Jim Watson and Richard Prasad, for leading the training; International Representative Paul Dolsen for his expertise; and International Reps Mike LeBlanc and Rich DiPietro for helping to facilitate the sessions. Week two of the NBMT will pick up in late January, 2025 in Saint John, New Brunswick. Previous Post IVP Remembrance Day Message
